QUESTION: Some people think that the best way to solve traffic problems is to build better train systems, but others think that the best way is to build more roads. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
MODEL ANSWER:
Some people claim that constructing a more extensive rail network is the best measure to resolve traffic issues, while others consider the expansion of the road network to be a better solution. In this essay, I will elaborate on both of these viewpoints and give reasons why I personally believe the latter to be a more favorable option.
It is undeniable that a more developed rail transport infrastructure would significantly reduce the number of commuters travelling on the road. Due to the ability of trains to move large numbers of people at once, increasing the number of railway tracks would provide people with an easily accessible means to commute to work without relying on private vehicles. For instance, more than 200,000 passengers are reported to make use of the Light Rail Transit system in Singapore every day, which brings down the number of road users drastically. Furthermore, train tickets are fairly affordable for an average worker. People who do not want to pay for the maintenance cost of a car are likely to opt for the train when pondering over ways to travel to work, and thus, traffic density will be reduced remarkably.
On the other hand, constructing more roads also proves to be a viable solution to the problem of traffic jams. Not only does the availability of roads allow for larger numbers of commuters travelling simultaneously and diminish the likelihood of traffic congestion but it also provides workers with more options of routes to travel to work. As people no longer bother with unnecessarily roundabout pathways as they commute, they will not have to spend as much time on the road, and therefore chances of a traffic jam would be minimized. For example, instead of taking the long way to avoid a construction site along the road, people can opt for another route to get to their destination without gathering at the roadblock. Finally, road transport allows greater commuting flexibility. Since trains only follow a fixed schedule, people who cannot adapt their daily plans to those of the railway systems would be unable to travel to their desired destinations, and thus, still rely on their own vehicles.
In conclusion, despite the accessibility and affordability of rail transport, I believe that building roads would resolve the issue of traffic jams more efficiently due to this method’s reliability, convenience, and superior flexibility.
