MODEL ANSWER

I’m going to tell you about a significant truth I once told my best friend, Anna, when we were both in freshman year at university. Back then, Anna and I shared a dormitory room and we seemed to hit it off straight away.

Although Anna was a kind-hearted person, I found out later that she was very shy and reserved. She was reluctant to make changes in life. It turned out that being like this hadn’t done her any good. As her bestie, I had a strong sense of duty to point out her weakness and help her become a better person. But given that, sometimes, the truth hurts, I was unsure how and when I could tell Anna about her shortcomings.

Eventually, I found an opportunity to tell her this critical truth. Once Anna and I played the game — Truth or Dare — in our room. After several rounds, I deliberately got a punishment and chose to tell the truth. Instead of telling my truth, I finally mustered up my courage to reveal Anna’s weakness. I remember I said that I wish her to be more courageous and open-minded.

My bestie’s first reaction to my words was astonishment. She was then silent for a while and replied with a serious tone: “Thank you for telling me this truth, my dear friend.” Over the following weeks, Anna tried her utmost to make a change. I saw her greeting people with a broad smile, becoming more engaged in class, and demonstrating greater initiative and confidence. Her reaction convinced me that it is always essential to tell the truth to your best friend, as long as it is beneficial to them in the long run.
