COLLOCATIONS AND USEFUL EXPRESSIONS
- curiosity (n) /ˌkjʊə.riˈɒs.ə.ti/ (C1) = a strong desire to know about sth (tính tò mò, tính hiếu kỳ)
COLLOCATIONS:
out of curiosity = because of curiosity (bởi vì tính tò mò)
satisfy sb’s curiosity = find out sth that you want to know (thỏa mãn tính tò mò của ai đó)
arouse sb’s curiosity = make sb want to know about sth (khiến cho ai đó muốn biết về điều gì)
pique sb’s curiosity = make sb very interested in sth (khiến cho ai đó rất quan tâm tới điều gì)
be burning with curiosity = want to know about something very much (rất muốn biết điều gì)
Examples:
Something she said had piqued his curiosity.
She was burning with curiosity about him, but was too polite to ask.
- prompt sth (v) /prɒmpt/ (B2) = to cause sth to happen = provoke (gợi nên, khơi lên, gây nên (cảm hứng, ý nghĩ…))
USEFUL PHRASES:
prompt early interests in sth: gợi nên những mối quan tâm về thứ gì

- stumble upon sth (C2) (phrasal verb) = to discover sth unexpectedly (tình cờ khám phá ra thứ gì)
Examples:
I stumbled upon this cafe quite by chance.
I stumbled upon this book by chance.
- run-down (adj) /ˌrʌnˈdaʊn/ = (of a building or place) in very bad condition = neglected ((tình trạng) tồi tệ, điều kiện kém, tồi, xuống cấp) => Từ này dùng để mô tả tình trạng của 1 tòa nhà hoặc 1 nơi nào đó
USEFUL PHRASES:
run-down areas/buildings: các khu vực/tòa nhà bị xuống cấp
Example:
This area of Liverpool is poor and run-down.
- functional (adj) /ˈfʌŋk.ʃən.əl/ = practical and useful (hữu dụng, thiết thực)
Example:
The office was large and functional rather than welcoming.
- solidify sth (v) /səˈlɪd.ɪ.faɪ/ = to become or to make sth become more definite and less likely to change; to become or make sth become certain (củng cố, khiến cho cái gì trở nên rõ ràng hơn, trở nên vững chắc hơn)
COLLOCATIONS:
solidify sb’s enthusiasm for sth: khiến cho niềm đam mê về thứ gì trở nên rõ ràng hơn
solidify sb’s position: củng cố vị trí, vị thế
Example:
It has solidified its position as a leading company.
- immerse (v) /ɪˈmɜːs/ = to become or make sb completely involved in sth (đắm chìm vào)
USEFUL PHRASES:

be/become immersed in sth: trở nên đắm chìm vào thứ gì
Examples:
Since then I’ve lived alone and immersed myself in my career.
He’s really becoming immersed in his work.
- devotion to sth (n) /dɪˈvəʊ.ʃən/ = the action of spending a lot of time or energy on sth (sự hết lòng, sự tận tâm, sự tận tình, sự cống hiến)
Example:
His devotion to the job left him with very little free time.
- perceive sth (v) /pəˈsiːv/ (C1) = to notice, see, recognize or become aware of sth (nhận thấy, nhìn ra được)
Examples:
His talent and devotion to the subject were perceived by sb.
I perceived a change in her behaviour.
- eminent (adj) /ˈem.ɪ.nənt/ = (of people)famous and respected, especially in a particular profession (nổi tiếng, xuất sắc)
Examples:

- fire (v) /faɪər/ (C2) = to make sb feel very excited about sth or interested in sth; cause a strong emotion in sb (khiến cho ai cảm thấy phấn khích hoặc đam mê thứ gì)
COLLOCATIONS:
fire sb with enthusiasm = to make sb feel very enthusiastic (khiến cho ai rất đam mê)
fire sb’s enthusiasm/imagination

Examples:
I was fired with enthusiasm to go traveling in Europe.

- breakthrough (n) /ˈbreɪk.θruː/ (C1) = an important discovery or event that helps to improve a situation (bước đột phá, sự phát triển quan trọng, một khám phá quan trọng)

medical/scientific/technological breakthrough
Examples:
Scientists have made a major breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.
Progress toward medical breakthroughs is typically painstaking.
- fortune (n) /ˈfɔː.tʃuːn/ (B2) = a large amount of money (sự giàu có, sự thịnh vượng)
Example:
She has amassed a huge fortune from her novels.
=> amass sth (v) = to get a large amount of sth (có được lượng lớn thứ gì)
- viable (adj) (C1) = that can be done; that will be successful (có thể làm được, khả thi, có khả năng thành công)
Examples:
I’m afraid your plan is not economically viable.

- derive from sth (phrasal verb) (C1) = to come from sth (phát sinh từ, đến từ)
Example:
This word is derived from Latin.
- surpass sth (v) /səˈpɑːs/ (C2) = to do or be better than sth (hơn, vượt trội hơn, vượt qua)
Example:
The book’s success has surpassed everyone’s expectations.
- substitute (n) /ˈsʌb.stɪ.tʃuːt/ (C1) = a thing or person that is used instead of another thing or person (người thay thế, vật thay thế)
COLLOCATIONS:

useful/reasonable/good/poor substitute
be/become/provide/use a substitute
Examples:
Social media provides a poor substitute for real, physical interactions.
Vitamins should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet.
- take up sth (phrasal verb) (B1) = to start doing a particular job or activity (đảm nhiệm một công việc, một hoạt động)
Example:
He’s taken up the position of supervisor.
- attempt to do sth (v) (B2) = to make an effort or try to do sth (cố gắng làm gì, nổ lực làm gì)
Example:
He attempted to swim in the lake.
- end up (phrasal verb) (B1) = to find yourself in a place or situation at the end of a process or period of time (cuối cùng là)
Examples:
He came round for a coffee and we ended up having a meal together.
I ended up spending the night in the airport.
- prompt sb to do sth (C2) = to make sb decide to say or do sth (khiến cho ai quyết định làm gì)
Example:
Japan’s recession has prompted consumers to cut back on buying cars.

Example:
Her doctor has assured us that she’ll be fine.
- fierce (adj) /fɪəs/ = (especially of actions or emotions)showing strong feelings or a lot of activity, often in a way that is violent (dữ dội, mãnh liệt)
Examples:
Competition from abroad became fiercer in the 1990s.

- utilize (v) (C1) = to use sth for a particular purpose (sử dụng)
Example:
We must consider how best to utilize what resources we have.
- boost (n) /buːst/ = an act or event that increases or improves sth (sự gia tăng, sự cải thiện)
Example:
The campaign for pension reform received a boost on Sunday.
- flatter sb (v) /ˈflæt.ər/ = to make sb look attractive (tôn lên vẻ đẹp, làm ai đó trông thu hút hấp dẫn)
Examples:
That new hairstyle really flatters her.
That colour doesn’t flatter many people.
- be all the rage (idiom) = to be very popular at a particular time (rất phổ biến)
Example:
Internet shopping is now all the rage.
- clamour (v) /ˈklæm.ər/ = to demand sth loudly (hò hét đòi hỏi)
Example:
The audience cheered, clamouring for more.
- go back to the drawing board (idiom) = to start thinking about a new way of doing something after a previous plan or idea has failed (quay lại từ đầu để chuẩn bị một kế hoạch mới vì kế hoạch trước đã thất bại)
Example:

- crucial (adj) /ˈkruː.ʃəl/ = extremely important, because it will affect other things (cực kỳ quan trọng, mang tính quyết định)
