Brainstorm ideas for the question below

Question: Many foods are shipped from far away. Some people think that eating local food is more environmentally and economically. Do you think the advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

Advantages of eating local food

By choosing to spend your money on locally produced food, you can support individuals in your own community and help them prosper.

Through buying local products, you can also ensure the livelihood of many small local farmers.

Since local farmers don’t have the same transportation and distribution costs as large agricultural businesses, they can retain more of the profits from their sales. This helps small farming businesses become more successful as more people purchase from them.

Small local farms are also excellent for the economy because they create jobs. By supporting local food producers, you directly contribute to helping your friends, neighbors and other community members find sustainable employment.

By buying local food, you can support local farmers and other local companies. In turn, those companies will make higher profits and the tax revenue for the government will also increase as well.
The more food miles accumulated during food transport, the more fossil fuels that are consumed. This transportation causes greater carbon emissions.

Disadvantages of eating local food

The lack of imported food can make local farmers less competitive so they decide to produce what they feel is good for consumers and not what consumers demand from the market.

Local foods and goods are typically more expensive. Farmers and businesses who produce in smaller quantities typically incur higher costs associated with growing, producing and distributing their goods.

Some local producers also use organic or higher quality materials that are more costly. This is one of the main reasons locally grown food and goods are generally viewed as being of better quality.
It is argued that the unemployment rate would increase if more people choose to buy local produce. People whose job depends on transporting food and other goods across the country and from overseas have the potential to lose their jobs.
If people buy more local products, exports will drop significantly over time. This can be quite detrimental to countries that greatly rely on exports as their main income source.
